I think it would be an interrogation from hades for my child. Ummm..."why are these in here", "where did you get them", "who got them for you", and then throw them in the fireplace.
This is one fear I have with my kids. I know one day I will find something like that in one of my kids back pack. I sure hope not. But if I did find cigarettes. I would talk with my child. Find out if the cigarettes were theirs or someone else's. I would also talk about the dangers of cigarettes. Tell my child that smoking is not allow in my house. I would also ground my child to send them a message if the ciagettes were theirs.

I think I would discuss why this is so dangerous (possibly even show my child pictures of smoker's lungs), the risks involved, and the other things that go along with smoking: the smell, the yellowing of teeth and fingernails, wrinkles, etc.
And, I would have my kids sit down with their Great Aunt who is suffering with Emphysema. She could explain how much she struggles to breathe, has to carry around an oxygen tank everywhere she goes, etc.
Then we'd discuss disciplinary actions!

This would be a tough one because I am a smoker. It's difficult to try to teach your kids something they shouldn't do, but they see you doing it. If I found cigarettes in my child's backpack, this would be a sign for me to quit smoking. I certainly do not want my children to pick up my bad habit. I would try to find the worst picture of a smoker's lungs and show the long term effects of smoking. (I could probably learn a lesson myself.)
I would go to the hospital and ask permission to go the pathology department and show them the perils of smoking. I used to smoke and I quit almost 3 years ago.

This is what the Lord asks of you; only this, to act justly, to love tenderly and walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8
He said to me, "My grace is enough for you, for in weakness power reaches perfection" 2 Cor 12:9
They would be grounded and there would be a long discussion as to why smoking is bad for you. I think I would also find a way to show them exactly what smoking can do to you. Through a class or whatever.
First, I would take away the cigarettes. Secondly, I would show my child pictures of lungs that belong to smokers and people who have been affected by second hand smoke. Thirdly, as punishment my child would have to write a research paper about lung cancer.
