changed son's meds

Took David to Dr. today for his ADHD checkup. For most part he is doing great on his Strattera. He has been on 60mg for about 2 years. Today the Dr. added 18mg of Concerta. Does anyone here have a child on both?He sadi that 1/3 of their patients are on some type of combination of drugs.

Is there a reason they wanted to add another drug? Unless he was having some serious issues that the other wasn't dealing with, hell would freeze over before I'd let them add something else.

I do not have a child that is ADHD, but I do have one that is special needs and takes meds for seizures. After tinkering with different medication combos for 2 years I finally took him off of all but one medication..the only one that ever truly seemed to control his seizures at all. I did this against the doctor's wishes, but knew that the first med did not control his seizures and the 2nd one did. They tried to tell me that it might be the combination of the two that was controlling them, but I was willing to risk it. Hell, he'd had seizures everyday for years ... what was the difference? So, now he takes ONE medication and God willing it will always be that way. I think if you choose to medication children, for ANY reason, keeping it at a minimum is always best. Regardless of what they say we truly don't know how these medications will effect them in early childhood until later. My son does not talk at all (he's 12) and I truly believe it's because he was so doped up on seizures meds from the age of 6 months to 2 years that he just completely missed his window of opportunity.

I thank God for life saving medications and am not against the drug companies totally...but I do think that too many doctors are willing to over-medicate these days just for the kick backs they get from the drug companies. Just be careful and use your "mommy instincts". They're never wrong.

I have 3 on concerta two are on 54 the other is on 36 but not on anything else we tried stratera and it didnt work with them at all but I not sure how high stratera goes on milgrams so he may have added the stratera to boost the dose I have no . My guys are on just the concerta its the only med that agreed with my kids. you should call him and ask him why? Id be concerned is this his dr. or is this a neurologist that gave it to him? Id question it till he comes up with abetter explanation I have never heard of two meds being mixed like that.

I've heard of the combination of the drugs...but I don't know anyone on them.

Each drug has it's own properties and interacts with the chemistry of the body in it's own way,

for example different meds but same scenerio...an child can be given tylenol every 4 hours for fever....if the fever is really high you can alternate with ibuprofen/motrin every 4 hours....but you break it up so a dosage is being given every 2 hours....
tylenol....2hrs later ibuprofen....2 hrs later tylenol... and so forth.... they are both pain relievers and fever reducers..... but given in alternate entervals they can break a high fever.... 2 different meds with very similiar properties...working in the same capacity to reach a common goal.....(not medical advice just an example....had to type that disclaimer because of my profession). if you have major concerns about the combination or even a particular drug call up your pharmacy!!!

ask your pharmacist his opinion on the combination of the drugs and the dosage levels as well... those pharmacist know there meds!!!! it's their profession.
