I didn't see a forum for ADHD Support or anything like that so I am writing here in the Special Needs section.
Today Shawn's teacher suggested that I make an appointment with his dr about his behavior and possibly putting him on medicine. I knew that this was coming but it still made me feel like I wanted to . Of course, I'm sure that being 39 weeks and 3 days pregnant doesn't with the emotional feelings but it is still hard to hear.
I held Shawn back from Kindergarden this year because I nor his teacher thought he was mature enough for Kindergarden. I also started packing his breakfast and lunch to try to control his diet more. We cut out red dye and alot of sugary products. His teacher was seeing progress int he middle of the year but the last few weeks he has went totally down hill. He is getting aggrivated at school. The teacher says she can tell Shawn wants to do well and is trying but he just can't control himself.
At home he doesn't listen to anything I say and he has no attention spam. Getting him to do anything is like pulling teeth. I send him to his room, take away things, and have even started smacking his butt but nothing s.

It does look like you have to take him to the Doctors. Please, Please be careful with giving him any drugs. I've seen more special programs warning parents about these drugs. Have his blood tested first, to see what he can take. Insist on this, as Doctors don't always/automatically do it for you. Start him on the lowest dosage possible, and work from there.
I know just how you feel. My son has ADHD. He is on Strattera. Without it, he wasn't eating or ing. In addition to cutting out sugar, try cutting out caffine. It has really ed my son. Good luck. If you want to, you can e-mail me if you need to "talk"

as you have seen I have posted about my triplets I have 2 boys and 1 girl my boys have it and they are 61/2 and on concerta this is the one that seems to work best we went to a nuerologist and all and with peds dr. we put them on meds. my son Ian also has sensory integration when the whole world is too noisy and they dont liked to be touched, foods are a . Does your son have any signals like that the "OUT OF SYNC CHILD" talks all about the different types of sensory there are many different things and that with the adhd makes it worse. I held my kids back also they will be 7 going into first grade. My son Ian still has the sitting down problems . If you need to talk to someone about the steps we went by we didnt do this lightly it was a very hard decision but we had lots of different things that caused me to put them on the meds more than listed. I know its hard believe me.
I know you have a lot on your plate right now with your new comeing and life in general but I want to offer another sugestion
If you can get to the library they have wonderful books that offer non med s and offer alot of advice.on how to deal with your family and life around your son They are very ful

Sorry it has taken me so long to reply. I have been busy with the baby. I had an appointment with Shawn's dr but Wesley decided he wanted to be born that day instead. I will be making another appointment after the holiday.
Thank you all for your support!! My family is not being supportive at all. My brother accused me of wanting to turn Shawn into a zombie. His girlfriend who is just graduating high school and planning to go to college for physcology d with me saying that ADHD is not even real. Neither of them have spent more then a hour with Shawn and they only see him about once a month.
His teacher does see an extreme difference in him when he doesn't get the proper so I think maybe the dr will try to get that regulated first. I am just going in to talk to her first though. I don't plan to right into meds. I'm just afraid we are running out of other options.
Mrs. Fish~ He doesn't get much caffiene. I don't let him have soda except on special occasions. He drinks mostly water and sometimes 100% juice or milk. Shawn actually saw a commercial on tv for strattera and said mommy, I need to have some of that. I was in !!
Devil's Fan~ What is the Chadd Website?
momofbpi~ I'm not sure what you mean by signs of the Out Of Sync Child. Shawn is just very active. I mean he actually runs around outside all day when he is home. He doesn't walk anywhere. My dad even nick named him forrest gump. The problems start when you try to get him to sit still and do something.
The strange thing is he will sit and watch a full length movie or play video games for hours but anything else and he doesn't want to sit still. The teachers seperate him from the rest of the class to do his work.

BELLINGSWORTH, HAVE YOU CHECKED OUT THE SITE I POSTED YET? MAYBE IT COULD HELP YOU!
In answer to your question, what is CHADD? It is a Website, for the nation's leading non-profit organization serving individuals with Attention-Deficient Disorder/Hperactivity Disorder (AD/HD). Through collaborative leadership, advocacy, research, education and support, CHADD provides science-based, evidence-based information about AD/HD to parents, educatiors, professionals, the media and the general public. Please try this out. It's http://www.chadd.org. I feel you find this informative and perhaps ful. Thank you Devilsfan, for the suggestion. Bellingsworth, I think you'll be thanking her soon as well. Hope this s too!
Bellingsworth The book the out of sync child shows how sensory problems can make adhd even worse. MY sons both have adhd and one has sensory integration and it make s it hard for them to cope with the world the way it is. I feel for you. I didnt want to do anything either but my son Ian was worse and he would run into traffic he broke his arm climbing on a windowsill trying to knock a tv of f its pearch we had it up off the ceilieing so the kids couldnt dump it off the floor well he figured out to do it and shattered his elbow and had to be rushed to the hospital where they put rods in his arm. Its a very hard thing to do . I cut out candy, sugar of anykind hardly give juice they cant have soda because o f reflux but dont want them having it anything. the y love fruits and vegetables salads and such.
My dr. wants us to try stratera this summer I guess it takes about a month to get into a childs system but ther eis no stimulants Im willing to try to get them off the concerta . There are many drugs out there. and there is biofeedback totry but having them diagnosed by a proper dr. is the key took them to a neurologist.
and she diagnosed them we had them tested at childrens hospital thats how we found Ian had sensory integration. he doesnt liked to be huged , loud noises bother him tons of stuff distract him if its too noisy around and things like that and never can sit down and once there pills wear off they are like tigger ing around.
Tell your brother that ADHD IS reall and it exists and believe it this is from experts at achildrens hospital here in Connecticut.
Good luck make sure you have a good dr. you trust and then go from there.
Betsy how are thing going with your son? I have an appointment for July 7 to take my son to apply for SSI benefits. Is there anyone here that may have any tips on this? I hope all is going well for you and the new addition. Good luck
Amy

Well this is a very ful thread and you are all such caring & wonderful women. Kim has been so ful to me as my son Duncan has to undergo an MRI at the end of September and she has experience in this.
Betsy, when I taught Daycare we had a ton of kids on medication.(even when they didn't ned it!) I think some parents may be too quick to medicate, and that you are wise to be cautious and try diet & regulating first! I would say take Shawn to a neurologist before you medicate! They are more knowledgable than a regular pediatrician when it comes to brain chemistry, etc. Also he could just "learn" differently, in that case a state sponsored IEP (individualized education plan) may out a lot! If you have a Family resource Center there, call and set up an appointment with a case worker. Duncan has a caseworker who is ing him learn to overcome his Gross motor challenges.
And remember to take care of yourself too, and that we !
PM or email me anytime!

Bruinsmomma your right I took my kids to the neurologist and had all the test run and everything believe me I didnt medicate without hesitation but I saw my sons struggling to understand and not being able to sit still. My son Ians sensory integration like the dr. explained it that all the noise and conversations and everything around the child is being filtered into there head and he takes in everything around him and computes it and he can actually tell you what everyone needs to do in that room also. Its tough but we are starting the stratera now Im hoping it will work because Id like to get them off the stimulant and these pills are supposed to be nonstimulant. Im ing it works. My sons cant make it in the classroom without the medication.
We already did the diet and things and hey im not saying this is the only way to go but its what has worked for my kids .
Sometimes you have to make a hard choice and its ed me . I hope you find what works for you its very frustrating and I understand it been doing it for several years now. Good luck. need to vent im here
I have meet many long term from the chadd chatt group. It is no longer a free chat .
I have ADD and Both my girls are ADHD. My oldest is not on meds but we had to place my youngest on Strattera. For the past few monthes she has been on it. I don't see much of a change latly. she is only on 40mil grams.
I am not a med kind of person this was the last thing on the list of trying to her. She is so very and everything gets to her. It is like living with a 10 year old on PMS 24 hours a day.
But we deal with her the best way we can. I know from pass dealing punishment seams to make the kid trive on being worse as it sounds.
Good luck and I have a few web sites i can share that are on my life with add site I have.
Tracee my sons were like that on aderal the concerta worked well but we wanted to try the stratera if it doesnt work for them then they are going back on the concerta that was the only one we tried dexidrine, ridelen that turned my sons very we tried adderal and the concerta and that was like hitting gold it worked so well but they have been on stimulants since they were 4 so I want to give them a break but if the stratera doesnt work t hey will be going on the highest dose of concerta.
We have gone through services at our childrens hospital also and he gets ot at school . Im trying to get my son a teachers aid but it maynot be possible withour town budget but I have spoken with his new teacher he will have in first grand and shes very proactive with trying to get him settled best we can in her room. I understand not wanting to do pills and such I have done the diets the time o uts and the co unceling and they didnt work. Have you thought of trying like concerta its long acting once a day pill . We keep in constant with there reg.physcians and the nureologist. good luck I know how hard it is. If youneed to just vent let me know
My youngest has a aid with her at school though becon light program in PA! she has had one now for a year and a half. Don't always work for her. I had tryed and tryed to put off meds.
I was told I had ADD when I was 23 pregnet with Krystal my youngest. Thay were trying to blame all my problums I was having on my pegnesy but I know better. I had always had a hard time focosing, dealing with people, mood swings, ing spells, and so on all my like.
So after i had her they tryed diffrent meds on me. I did not feel any better or any diffrent the doctor tryed to raise it everytime and really was makeing me mad I hate to feel out of control of my own body and mind. So I did not stay on them long. So I am med free at this time but I am still looking for a new doc and canclering. I need it badly. But I am lucky to have you all to chatt with and make me feel whole as a person when my days are so blue.
So stick in there and always know that love and understanding is the best thing to you adhd child. And stay open to them to talk to you about anything.
