Lightbulb Standardized Testing In Schools?

What are your thoughts on the government making schools test our school children with testing at certain grade levels and then holding the teachers and the schools accountable for how well or how badly our children score on these standardized tests?

Do you feel its a good thing or a bad thing and why?

I hate it because it seems that, all the teacher's do is get ready for these tests. My daughter is under a lot of pressure, now is the math test, this child is only in the 4th grade imagine when she is in high school and then we wonder why kids do not want to go to school. That crap about no child gets left behind, is so much crap, practically every child is getting left behind. Let the teachers teach and government should mind their business.

Standardized testing

I homeschool my children, but they still have to take the Iowa Standardized Test every year from 3 - 8 grades, a state requirement. Last year was the first year that my daughter tested, and I was very surprised by her test results. I do not believe it accurately measured her achievement. She excelled in math (her worst subject, but the subject we crammed the month prior to) and bombed one area that I would have said she was most advanced in. I am already finding myself "teaching to the test" again this year, trying to get her prepared. I can definitely see why teachers get frustrated, feeling that they have to teach to the test and not just "teach"!

I am not fond of the testing.

I do however feel that teachers need to be held accountable for things. I can remember in high school that my one history teacher was a drunk and often came in for first period hung over and would nap at his desk well all of us either napped or goofed off.

I learnt absolutely NOTHING in his class that year.

I have seen good and bad teachers over the years while my daughter was growing up...so I do feel that teachers need to be held accountable.
