Well for our triplets first birthday we had a huge barbecue withour whole family. we had cakes for each of the kids and one for the public to eat and we got a pinata too. we did pooh back then. We didnt do a moon bounce or anything but a lot of people do that too. good luck with it but dont make it too big its overwhelming for them at that age.
i know my son's first birthday party was actully something rather simple, just the family and a cake

kids like simple foods. these are:hotdogs, pizza. basicaly finger foods. with the 1st birthday cake you will want to have one for the kid and on for the adults. this way she can dive right in and you will get great pict's.my 3 year old loves the princes thing and has since she was 2.
you could use:the wiggles, bear in big blue house, pooh, doodiel bopps. just put on the disney channel and see what makes her go bannanas and then you will know what is right to use.

Oh how fun!! A first bday
Like Kim said, kids can get overwhelmed for this bday.
Do have her own little cake. Some bakery's will do a free first bday cake.
I've heard of the Backyardigans though I've never seen the show. If its a Nick Jr. show you can go to Nick Jr's website for s.
Also, try google searching birthday parties or try www.about.com. That site has alot of links for everything you can think of.
Good luck and keep us informed.
