We just returned from seeing The Water Horse. My soon to be 14 yo dd and her 12 yo friend both enjoyed this movie, as did I. The whole movie takes place in Scotland and is a supposed story of the Loch Ness Monster's origin. It was quite well done. However, there is talk about WW2, shooting of cannons, some killing of animals - for food - and (Spoiler Alert!!!) the fact that the boy's father was killed in the war. There is smoking in the movie - by adults - because that is what most people in that time did. It isn't glamorized at all and very brief.
Anyway for parents of early teens this is a good family movie. I doubt that it would be great for very young children, but it might be okay. If I had young children, I would pre-screen it before viewing it with them.
I agree w/ you.
I took my kids and one of their to see it.
The kids are 7,7 & 8 yrs old.
They asked alot of questions about the soldiers and the cannons.
It was hard to explain it to them.
Over all they did enjoy the movie.
I liked it too.
