May 15 - U.S. President Abraham Lincoln signs a bill into law creating the United States Bureau of Agriculture (later renamed USDA).
May 20 - U.S. President Abraham Lincoln signs the Homestead Act into law

January 22 - After reigning for almost 64 years, longer than any other British monarch, Queen Victoria died at the age of 81. Her eldest son, Prince Albert Edward, Prince of Wales becomes King, reigning as King Edward VII until 1910. His son, Prince George, Duke of York becomes Duke of Cornwall. 1888

JanuaryTuesday 03: refracting telescope at Lick Observatory is used for the first time. It was the largest telescope in the world at the time.
