You might not know the name “Mbube,” but I’ll wager you’d recognize the song. It is the original version of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.”
There are about 100 different recordings of this song. You might recognize it from Disney’s Lion King. Or you might know one or more of the other versions. But you probably don’t know its history.
Written by Solomon Linda in the 1920s, it is the subject of a documentary. Today's Cool Site has links to articles on the song’s history. And you can find out how Linda’s family is trying to get a share of royalties.
