Over age 25? Read this -- LOL

OVER 25!

All people over 25 should be dead...

To the survivors:

According to today's regulators and bureaucrats, those of us who were kids in the 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's probably shouldn't have survived.

Our baby cribs were covered with bright colored lead-based paint.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets, and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets. (Not to mention the risks we took hitchhiking.)

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.

We boiled eggs, colored them, hid them, and kept them unrefrigerated for days before we ate them. And didn't end up getting .

Riding in the back of a pickup truck on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle. Horrors! We shared one soft drink with four , from one bottle, and no one actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, bread and butter, and drank soda pop with sugar in it, but we were never overweight because we were always outside playing.

We would leave home in the and play all day, as long as we were back when the street lights came on. No one was able to reach us all day. No cell phones. Unthinkable.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then rode down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo 64,X-Boxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels on cable, video tape movies, surround sound, personal cell phones, personal computers, or Internet chatrooms.

We had ! We went outside and found them.

We fell out of trees, got cut and broke bones and teeth, and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We made up games with sticks and tennis balls and ate worms, and although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes, nor did the worms live inside us forever.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's home and knocked on the door, or rang the bell or just walked in and talked to them.

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment.

The of a parent bailing us out if we broke a law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law. Imagine that!

Our generation has produced some of the best risk-takers and problem solvers and inventors, ever. The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new s.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all.

And you're one of them!

Congratulations. Please pass this on to others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before lawyers and government regulated our lives, for our own good.

Doesn't it kind of make you want to run through the house with scissors?

Man, Do I miss my childhood! Wish my kids could have experienced it like we did. My knees and elbows were always one big scab. Not my kids too intersted in computers and tv. Nothing like a little fresh air.

, I have the pop, you just bring the cupcakes. Ok, i will wait on you but hurry.

Countrymama I agree with you. I wish my kids could have experienced it the way we did too. We didnt' need expensive toys to play with, we made our own fun.
I think of those days a lot, I guess the older we get the more we miss them.

You two ladies will just love this one. My wonderful son ... he's a riot!!!!

We live just under 3 blocks from his school -- now as overweight and out of shape as I am ... I can walk to that school with very little trouble!!!!

Anyway, he was complaining about having to walk to/from school all the time. I reminded him that my elementary school was 13 blocks from my childhood home and that I walked it every single day ... rain, snow, windy days, super hot days and super days. Here's the good part ... I suggested that he do what I did while I was walking home from school. I told him I tried to pass the time by creating little adventures and before I knew it I was home!!! His response was ... "HOW DID YOU DO THAT???" Can you believe it??? I said "Jeez ... use your God given brain ... use your imagination and create adventures in your head!!!!!". He just looked at me. I was stunned!!! He gets very little TV and what little TV he does gets must be earned!!! Since we became very strict with TV and video games his graces have gone from Cs and Ds to As and Bs!!!! It's made a great difference in his life. However, you'd think that being an only child he'd have at least some imagination!!!!

Amazing what our children are missing out on. I used to use my imagination while mowing the grass too ... we had the equivalent of 3.25 lots so it took me a 3-4 hours to get the lawn done!! Oh man ... just writing this post takes me back ... I remember some of the really adventures I had and most of them involved the huge willow trees in our back yard ... I was always in the jungle for some reason or another!!!!

I didnt' know the movie "Honey I Shrunk the Kids" was out back when you were cutting grass. That is what it made me think of when you said you were always in the jungle.

I thought you were going to say what my kids always said to us when we would tell them how far we walked to school and so on.
They would say, "but mom that was in the olden days." I can remember my parents telling us about what they did as kids too and we would say the same thing to them. Amazing how kids are so different today from what we were. This is a thread all by itself you know.

The problem today is there is just too much out there for the kids today. When we were kids we didnt' have all these things and had to make our own fun. We made up our own games and everything. How many kids today go out and play hop-scotch or hide and seek or red light, green light etc. Not any that I know of.

Well, in defense of my little rug rat ... on occasion he and the neighborhood kids do get together and play what they call "Manhunt" which is basically hide and go seek but he plays with "older" kids so they need to have a more "mature" name for the game LOL.

You're right DeeDee ... this is a thread of its own.

Wow, this made me think back to the good old days. You're right, what is wrong with kids today? I guess they do have too much. That's what I like about camping. The kids get out with other kids and play and use their imaginations some. It was nice going down memory lane though. Maybe our kids will do the same thing one day and ask the same questions we are?? This should be a new thread!! It could be kinda fun finding out what everyone else was doing.

That is so true, and I am guilty of my kids not going out enough! Also the PS2, 99 channels, and car seats. Not about the car sets though. When they are outside with me they can eat a worm if they want (?) I do give them worms and other bugs to see. I do feel bad for my boys that they arn't getting what I had. I don't mind not going to the Emergency room as much as my parents had to w/me.

I remember when...
The whole neighborhood of kids(ranging in all ages, and you didnt worry about that) would get together at dusk and play red light green light! Catching lightning bugs and making them jewelry! Putting on roller skates and flying down the biggest hill in the neighborhood ( with no helmet) Taking bikes rides with your where you thought you were an explorer of the city.

I try to show the girls ( a little young still ) how much fun these things are mainly because I still love doing these things and with kids around you dont look so silly doing them!

I guess like the one mother said restrictions on the new technology is a must if we want to get our kids to be imaginative and creative! Thanks for this thread ,,,memory lane was GREAT!

PS the five second rule never hurt us any either!

That was great! I am right there with you Amy about the five second rule! I make my kids go outside a lot and I strictly regulate the TV and playstation. But it is still not the same! Oh well! Wonder what the future for our children's children holds?
