Cats and their unique "odors"

I had an old Tom Cat sneak in last week and he obviously sed in our son's bedroom. Now my indoor cat (15 yrs old) is trying, I think, to eradicate the foreign cat smells by sing there also. I can't get the smell out of the carpet. It's not an option to tear out the carpet....too expensive to replace right now, but I can't stand this! Can anyone tell me how to stop this from happening again and how to get the smell and stains out?

well as a temperary fix you can burn a candle if you have anyone coming over that can cover the smell. usually I try and shampoo the carpet that s too, if you dont have a shampoer you could try weting the area with a water solution and then sucking it out with a wet dry vac. you might also want to try flylady.com she might have some tips on getting the smell out. we have a place in my DD room that was here when we moved in I have tried a lot of things to get the smell out and for the most part you cant smell it but some days (hot ones) you can. If I think of anyother Ideas I'll post again good luck!

Cats

Thanks I've tried shampooing and it hasn'd done much good. The candle is a good one too that I hadn't thought of. I appreciate you taking the time to share your tips. Thanks

perky.....there is a company I'm working through right now that has a cleaner that takes out the smell also...my "mentor" just told me she used it at her house the other day for a male cat she had found that did the same thing and it worked great. If you need info, pm me.
