My family was invited to a "Quinceneria" (spelling probably wrong) party for our neighbor a few houses down. It was her 15th birthday party. It started at 8:00 PM and we just got home about 30 minutes ago.
I have a confession:(Marilyn, you may not want to read this part or at least don't let the cows see it!!!!)
I ATE COW TONGUE!!!!!!!!
They put some tortillas piled up with what I thought was beef, onions, cilantro, cactus.....so, not wanting to offend, I picked one up and ate it. It was really good. Then my oldest daughter ate some of the meat (she does not eat green!) and my son ate two of them. I was considering having a second one when I asked my hostess what was it called. I managed to wait until she left the table to start ing. It was just so funny!! I ate cow tongue. My kids ate cow tongue. When I told my kids what it was, it was HYSTERICAL. My son still liked it. My oldest daughter said, and I quote, "It's like frenching a cow cuz you're tongue to tongue! EEW Gross!" I almost fell out of my chair on that one. Then she proceeded to pick up pieces of the "meat" and look for taste buds. She was sure she found some.
It was a really nice party. We did not understand 3/4ths of what was going on as it was in Spanish. But we were certainly very wel comed. It was nice. NOW.....that I have my confession off of my chest, I guess I will go to bed. I just hope that cow tongue does not jabber too much in my belly!

Well, you know my husband is Mexican. We have cow tongue all the time we have it in tacos. Tell your daughter the tastebuds are removed because, what is eaten is the meat of the tongue. You see Mexicans are people that do not waste anything from the animals they kill. I will not eat eyeballs or testies or anything else. I stop at cow tongue. As a matter of fact I have two of them in the freezer to make them after lent. The tastebuds are like a casing for the tongue meat it comes out easy. Anyway it tastes good is just the that is tongue.

Cool. You will have to give me a recipe. The one we ate, I admit, was very good. I love fresh onions and cilantro. Please send me some recipes!!
I will tell my daughter what you said. She is just so silly!

Oh gosh this is funny. Yes it reminds me of a time I was invited to my cousin's for dinner. The food was excellent and I really pigged out on this meat. It was absolutely wonderful. Everyone was enjoying the meal and my cousin's hubby asked if I knew what I was eating.
I said yes, its moose. He said yes but what part? I had no .
When I was done eating he told me what it was, moose tongue. I have to admit it was delicious but the guy who was sitting next to me was still eating and it didn't bother him to know what it was until I casually mentioned, Yes, it is good, but you don't know where that tongue was last. Well he almost heaved his meal right then and there and everyone just burst out ing. We about that today each time it is brought up. It was so funny.
Sorry to make anyone ill by reading this. I just had to post it.

I don't like tongue. We were forced to eat cow tongue when I young. ewww But I do like barbacoa (not sure on spelling, but that is the way it sounds).. We are wanting to get some sometimes when the Mexican store downtown makes it and have the boys try it without telling them where it comes from. But it is so tender and good. But I'll admit, I wouldn't have tried it the first time if I had not known what it was either. It is the meat from the cow's head.

And I have to post again because DeeDee's post made me and reminded me of a joke I got in my email the other day called The Old Cowboy.... Hope not to make anyone .
A young cowboy walked into a bar and sat down. There was an old cowboy sitting there with a bowl of chili but he was just staring at it. After awhile the young cowboy sees the old cowboy hasn't eaten it and is still only staring at it so the young cowboy says, "If yer not gonna eat that, I'd be happy to take it off yer hands." The old cowboy thinks a minute and says okay. The young cowboy takes the bowl of chili and proceeds to eat it gone. When he gets to the bottom of the bowl he sees a rat laying there and up-chucks the chili back into the bowl. The old cowboy says, "Yep, that is 'bout as far as I got too."

Cow tongue is great tasting. Had some a few years ago and was made in a rice and bean and seasoning mixture. Didn't know what it was at first but sure tasted great.
Luz, I need to know how to cook cow tongue. I don't see it in any of my cookbooks (and I have about 300). Love ya!
