I always like to hear the older folks talk about home remedies that hey used to use like hot toddies and garlic compresses. Have you heard of any? Let's see how many different ones we can come up with and if you know if they work.

Oh I can think of a few here. I can remember the old mustard plasters, can't remember how they were made though.
Then there was the bread and warm milk poultice that you put on and it drew out infection. I remember that one and have used it on my kids. It works.
Then there is the honey and lemon cough syrup, I love it. In fact my mouth is watering just mentioning it here.
I have heard of the spanish onion sitting on the cupboard with the center top cut out and brown sugar put into it. Then for coughs or sore throat, you drink some of the liquid. is all I can say about this one.
Can't think of any more right now but I may come up with more yet.
Anyway, I have one to add. I took my daughter to the doctor yesterday because she has such very dry skin. It looks like psoriasis all over her body! We tried putting on baby oil while she's still wet after a and lots of lotion, but she's still so dry.
Anyway, the doctor said baby's have dry skin and that an old family doctor had told him of instead of baby oil, because it wipes off so easy, to use like Crisco, with coconut oil because it sticks better.
I don't know about smearing her with Crisco, but he did tell me to ask the pharmacist about something that would be along these lines.
When I was younger my mom used to drop hot oil into my ear with a dropper when I had an earache. She also used to make salt bags that she would heat up in the oven to put on my sore ear--we didn't have a microwave, but it would work just as well. (She would take an old wash cloth, sew up three sides, fill it with salt and then sew up the other side). All of my siblings had frequent earaches, so we had lots of these bags on hand.
As well, for any breast feeding mothers, breastmilk heals anything. My son had a weepy eye when he was first born and my midwife told me that I should put a little bit of breastmilk in his eye and it worked! He also constantly scratched his face with his nails and the milk healed his scrapes too!
Gosh Becky, you got me there. I can remember the mustard plasters but for the life of me cant' remember what they were used for. Hubby forgets too but remembers them.
I will find out though and get back to you on this.
hmmm, I hope I remember this right...but to get out ink from clothing use hairs.
gosh I hope I heard that right, I hate to ruin someones clothing............but I do know this...........to get out wax from carpeting, take a towel place over the wax and use a iron to get in out.
Wow, you all have heard of alot. I think the mustard plaster is for s but I'm not sure. I could be mixing them up,that is why I thought this might be a fun thread, also a goodway to learn some old home remedies. I'm going to buy me some limes the next time I'm at the grocery store, lulu, I was up all night last night with a migraine!!! They are getting more frequent and I hate taking a bunch of medicine. I'm going to ask some of the Senior citizens to write me down some of the home remedies they remember for me and if I get some I'll post them for you all to read, ok? I will hopefully get to see them today. My office is in the same building as they meet in. And today is one of their meeting days.

Not a good weekend and so far not a good week!! But this isn't the place to whine about that stuff. Talk to ya later!!

Polly, I think that you are right about the mustard plasters, I think they are maybe to clear up congestion like maybe nasal congestion. I can remember gargling with salt water for a sore throat. You warm the water and dissolve some salt in it. I can remember giving my children mint tea for tummy aches. Also, peppermints are good for soothing tummy aches or ing with sinus congestion. To dry up blemishes, you can put a tiny spot of regular hpaste (not gel) on it and it does dry it. Of course, ginger tea is good for the tummy.
Gosh, I can't remember all of the old remedies my mom used, but I will think about it. We used lots of them when I was growing up. I trust a lot of those things before many of todays medicines. You didn't have so many nasty side effects back then!
Does anyone remember putting a compress on their forehead with maybe vinegar on it? I think my mom did that too.
Hmmmm, nope dont' remember the one of the vinegar compress. You know I was talking with my mil today and darn I forgot to ask her if she remembers the mustard plasters. I must call her tomorrow and find out. When I know I will post for you guys.
Lindaann, we still use the warm water and salt solution. It does . It's also good for when someone loses a h. It s clean the wound and stop the bleeding. I remember hearing something about vinegar on a rad but don't know what it was used for??Maybe when I get things settled down at work I can go visit my grandmother in the nursing home and ask her and her roomate what they remember. I'll probably see my seniors at work on Friday but since the auditors will be there again, I don't know if I'll get to talk to them or not. Life is too sometimes!!! And mint is very good for tummy aches. I know when I eat pan pizza at Pizza Hut I get one of their mints and eat it after. It s prevent the belly I always get. l like to get the hand tossed crust but sometimes I lose out to the rest of the family, . Well, ladies I appreciate everyones input. I've always been facinated by this subject so it's good to hear so many tips and s. Thanks!!!
