Has your child been denied for kinderagarten but recommend for pre-school?

Have you had your child denied for kindergarten but recommended for pre-school instead? If so,what did you do? What was your first reaction? And if you would, why was the child denied?

Well.here's my story and my reaction as of right now:
I took my daughter to get tested for either pre-k or kindergarten.Remember when I have mentioned I thought my daughter was a little slow because of her speech.
Well,I was told they may recommend her for preschool because they have a hard time understanding what she says.
A lady gave me a card to call her that runs the county preschool.I guess the thing that pisses me off the most is the fact when I was eligible for my child to go to headstart/preschool and have it paid for.She was on a waiting list. And was never able to get in.None of my kids ever were because we live in the country.Kids live in the country go on a waiting list til an opening comes open.Apparnetly non did.Now they are telling me she may be required to go.When she is 5 yrs ols.Grrrr!! It really s me. I also explained to them that I have no clue if my daughter has a hearing problem or not.Because every time I have tried to get it done. The machine at the hospital and clinic was both broken. And with me having a hearing problem in both ears.I wasn't sure if she was saying the words right or not for me to correct her.
I will not find out the results until sometime in may.Now I know I am going to wrry until I hear them.
If they recommend her to pre-school.She will have to be re-tested agina nd have further testing.Sigh!! I really don't know what to think. Because if I keep thinking. Then I start thinking it could be possible she has a diese that runs in my hubbies side of the family.I was speaking to him about it and this diease target sthe hearing and seeing aspects.I can't spell it but both hubbies nieces has it.So,I am having the wait and see reproach til may.Aggg!!

Have you tried having her tested by Lifesteps? I'm not sure if they are in Ohio or not. But they tested my son for his speech problem and treated him for free. I think it is somehow connected to the United Way, although I may be wrong about that. It is something to look into. Hope I was able to .

my son was 5 when he started kind. and he was having problems because of problems he had at birth. I wish I would have held him back until he was 6 because he was the youngest in his class and always a little behind. It really did a number on his self-esteem, he always thought he was slow, no matter what we said to him. He was held back in first grade and now he is doing alot better. So maybe its a good thing that she is going to prek first. my children went to headstart, but its different here, we live in the country and they come knocking on your door looking for kids! You may want to call the headstart program and ask them if they have a therapy program. My 6 yr. old was a 2mth. premie and they brought in physical therapist and massage therapist for him when he was little, all free and through the headstart program, so it may not hurt to call and ask them.
I'll keep your little girl in my ers!

I never heard of such a thing. My daughter had speech problems which her pediatrician and myself found out. She was sent to Early Intervention, that is a program that gives them speech therapy as early as two and this is free. Now she is in the first grade and still takes speech she is doing okay. If I were you check out your chapter of the United Way and also Children's Aide Society in your area they have a lot of free programs that might be able to her. I in a way blame your pediatrician. If this person knew you had hearing problems, she should have tested your daughter a long time ago, if the machine was broken her duty was to send you somewhere else. I wish you lots of luck with that.

Update on my daughter:

She was retested in Ohio and was going to put in to a school called "Good Samaritin".

But than I moved to florida.

I talked to the pre-k/preschool program down here. They wanted the paper work on my my daughter from up north. So she didn't have to be retested a 3rd time.

I had a heck of atime getting those papers.I called the place where the testing was done. The lady that done them was on vaction til august 10th.They wouldn't even forward my call or number. They gave me two different numbers that nothing to do with her.I explained that school started earlier here than that.I needed to get ahold of her before than.Otherwise I couldn't get my daughter in school.

Finally my father in law got on the phone and threaten to get a lawyer in that area..even said the lawyers name and said he would sue if we didn't get those papers we requested.

Two days later I recived a call from the lady who was on vaction that ran the tests on my daughter.I had to fax her some things and explain it to her.She said she was going to send them via postal mail. She said she wasn't able to get a hold of me.Which was load of crap..because I had been shot in the leg and couldn't anywhere.Atthe time she claimed she tried to get ahold of me.

Two weeks later,I call the place back.Because I hadn't recived anything yet.

Then I finally got the paperwork I needed.

Went and seen the pre-k preschool lady down here.

Baad news is...my daughter still needs an i.ep. done and it can't be done til two weekks after schhol starts. So she will have to start school later than normal done here.because of all the delays in paperwork crap.

I know my daughter will need speech. That is one of things that got her qualified for the pre-school program....She has a delay in her motor skills.they think she has a hearing problem.Plus, she may has an eye problem.

They are going to do further testing to find out.
Plus,a heredity dieseae runs in the family. They think she may have that affects the ears and eyes.

We know she is special because of her not reaching her age goals when she was suppose or even close as to when her brothers had.

well,I recieved a call for an appointment for my daughter for tomorrow noon.So ,I will know more later. Keep your fingers crossed.Maybe she might make to school on time after all.

Here, in TN, the preschools are filled up with children needing speech therapy and OT before any other children get in. She should have never been on a waiting list. I must say your pediatrician was/is a freakin moron to have let these issues slip by for all of these years.

HOnestly, don't be in any hurry to get her into school. It is VERY common nowadays for people to wait until their children are 6 to start them in kindergarten. Let her have a year in Pre-school to get the socialization and therapies that she needs and it will be SOOOOOOO much easier on her in the long run. I would recommend that over putting her in kindergarten and then letting them hold her back a year. It's MUCH harder for them to see their move on and them not than for them to just be in pre-school for a year then move on up...and it's hard on their self-esteem, like someone else said, to struggle while the rest of the class is doing fine.

Looks as though you've got the testing done and all of that lined up..but you REALLY need to find a pediatrician to follow her and make sure she has EVERYTHING done that she needs. A good doctor can be your biggest advocate...and your best resource as to where you need to go next.

You do know that if they're doing an IEP with her, that means that she's receiving special services from the school right? Who is doing the IEP? The pre-school or the actual elementary school?

I had my concerns about putting my son (4 1/2) in kinder because of his speech. If he went to kinder at the same school dd goes to, he has to get speech from that school too.

His speech problems are because his muscles in
his mouth didn't fully develope. the speech he went to last yr
was designed for kids like him.
there was a total of 4 boys in the class.
There was a speech teacher & an aide.
each session was 50 min twice a week.

at the elementry school, i have no how many students
would be w/ him, for how long or how often.

I worried about the teacher not understanding him.

His speech teacher last yr, said yes, hold him back.
have him do speech again, then kinder.
she said he would benefit from headstart.

I was the one who asked about headstart.
no one told me (schools) he could get in, because he went to speech.
All I heard was we make too much $$
for him to qualify. so all last yr he could have gone !!

Someone called me & said the app. was lost for headstart.
So I went down filled out another.
They gave me an appt. I went to it,
brought all paper work. They said yes, he'll get in.
even gave me the starting day & time.

The last time I went to turn in dh paystub, the woman tells me
oh he'll be 5 in nov. (30th) he needs to be 4 on dec 2nd.
HE'LL BE 3 DAYS TOO OLD !!
I've had to wait a month, calling each week to see if anyone will approve
him to go. Yesterday, they tell me NO he has to be in kinder.

ACK !! school here is yr round.
DD started in JULY. so if I put him in her school,
he's missed a month already ! I don't want him on a different track.

Its so frustrating, it was their mistake !

I see how my son is. he wants to learn.
I had to buy him workbooks & make him a homework folder.
He wanted to do homework when dd does hers.

he's smart, he knows his numbers, how to count, letters.
I hate holding him back. I thought headstart would have been so good for him.

The woman asked why don't I put him in kinder at the school he goes to for speech. Ok I didn't even know they had kinder !
Now i'm trying to get an inter district transfer
if I can get him into Kinder at the school he goes to for speech, it'd be great.
That school is a special ed type school.
so the teachers will be better to understand & him.

school starts aug 29th !
why did they even tell me he gets into headstart ?

Grrrrr

Its just frustrating, people tell me one thing, i do everything I'm suppossed to do, they are the ones to make the mistakes, My son gets the bad end of it.
